<para>If you are upgrading an existing Virtuoso installation and want to preserve your existing data and configuration files:</para><orderedlist spacing="compact"><listitem> Shut down your Virtuoso instance as normal. </listitem>
<listitem> Goto to the database folder of the Virtuoso installation, which is typically in C:\Program Files\OpenLink Software by default. </listitem>
<listitem> Check the size of the <emphasis>virtuoso.trx</emphasis> file, found in the <emphasis>database</emphasis> folder alongside the virtuoso.db and virtuoso.ini files. <itemizedlist mark="bullet" spacing="compact"><listitem> If zero bytes, proceed to step 4. </listitem>
<listitem> If larger than zero bytes, start the instance from the command line with the extra argument, &quot;<ulink url="http://docs.openlinksw.com/virtuoso/databaseadmsrv.html#COMMANDLINE">+checkpoint-only</ulink>&quot;, and recheck .trx file size -- expecting zero bytes. </listitem>
<listitem> If larger .trx files persist, <ulink url="http://support.openlinksw.com/support/online-support.vsp">contact Technical Support</ulink>. </listitem>

<listitem> Make a backup of your existing Virtuoso Database and Configuration files (defaults are <emphasis>virtuoso.db</emphasis> and <emphasis>virtuoso.ini</emphasis>) prior to performing the steps that follow.
 <emphasis><emphasis>Note:</emphasis> Virtuoso&#39;s <ulink url="http://docs.openlinksw.com/virtuoso/backup.html#onlinebackups">online backup feature</ulink>, if enabled, should have already generated a backup-set.</emphasis> </listitem>
<listitem> Use the Add/Remove Programs utility to uninstall any previously installed Virtuoso components.
 Data and configuration files will be left behind by this process.</listitem>
</orderedlist><bridgehead class="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml:h2"> 1 - Download the Virtuoso Installer Program </bridgehead>
<orderedlist spacing="compact"><listitem> Select the Virtuoso release number and Windows operating system required from the <ulink url="https://shop.openlinksw.com/license_generator/virtuoso-download/">download site</ulink> and click on the <emphasis>Find Downloads</emphasis> button.

<listitem> Download the required Virtuoso Client and/or Client &amp; Server installer archives from the list presented.

<orderedlist spacing="compact"><listitem> If you haven&#39;t already obtained a suitable Virtuoso license file, return to the  <ulink url="https://shop.openlinksw.com/license_generator/virtuoso/">download site</ulink>, select the Virtuoso release number and Windows operating system required and click on the <emphasis>Generate License</emphasis> button.

<listitem> A <emphasis>Free 30 Day Evaluation License</emphasis> will be generated and emailed to the registered user.
 The license file will also be stored in the registered users <ulink url="https://my.openlinksw.com/ods/">OpenLink Data Spaces Briefcase folder</ulink>.
 <emphasis><emphasis>Note</emphasis> -- the file must be named <emphasis>virtuoso.lic</emphasis> for use.

<listitem> Tick the box for <emphasis>I accept</emphasis>, and click <emphasis>Next</emphasis>.

<listitem> Use the <emphasis>Browse</emphasis> button to select the location for the installation or if the default location is acceptable click the <emphasis>Next</emphasis> button.

<listitem> The installation is now complete.</listitem>

<listitem> Use the Conductor to configure your Virtuoso instance for future use.
 For example, it is <emphasis><emphasis>strongly</emphasis></emphasis> advised that you change the default passwords for the <emphasis>dba</emphasis> and <emphasis>dav</emphasis> super-user accounts (drill down to <emphasis>System Admin</emphasis> --&gt; <emphasis>User Accounts</emphasis>).</listitem>
</orderedlist><bridgehead class="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml:h2"> 6 - Optional - Restore your old Data and Configuration Files </bridgehead>
<para>If you preserved existing data and configuration files at the start of this process, now is the time to bring them back into play.</para><itemizedlist mark="bullet" spacing="compact"><listitem> If you used Virtuoso&#39;s online backup feature, <ulink url="http://docs.openlinksw.com/virtuoso/backup.html#onlinebackups">the documentation</ulink> will walk you through the restoration process. </listitem>
<listitem> If you simply copied the INI and DB files elsewhere, and if they were Virtuoso 7.x files, you can just stop the current Virtuoso instance, and replace the newly created INI and DB with the old ones.
 For best results, we do advise that you compare the content of the old INI with the new, and add any new settings from the new to the old, adjust as may be appropriate to your deployment. </listitem>
<listitem> If you simply copied the INI and DB files elsewhere, and if they were Virtuoso 6.x or older files, there are <ulink url="http://vos.openlinksw.com/owiki/wiki/VOS/UpgradingToVOS610">some extra steps that must be taken</ulink>.</listitem>
